1956: IBM announces the RAMAC, the first hard disk drive
On 13 September 1956, IBM publicly announced the IBM 305 RAMAC, a system whose most radical component was the world’s first commercial hard disk drive. RAMAC stood for Random Access Method of Accounting and Control. Inside its cabinet sat fifty magnetically coated platters, each 24 inches in diameter, stacked on a common spindle and served by a pair of moving read-write heads. The assembly could store roughly five million characters—about five megabytes—and retrieve any record in under a second.
Before RAMAC, most computers relied on punched cards or magnetic tape. Data had to be processed in the order it appeared; skipping ahead or jumping backward meant tedious rewinding or manual card sorting. Random-access storage removed that bottleneck. Inventory figures, scientific tables, or customer records could now be consulted the moment a program needed them, then updated and returned to the same location.
The practical gains for business were immediate, yet the deeper consequence unfolded over decades. Artificial-intelligence research depends on the ability to hold large bodies of knowledge and to revise them fluidly. Early theorem provers, chess programs and expert systems all required fast lookup of facts and rules. Later statistical and neural methods demanded still greater volumes of training examples and model parameters. None of this would have been feasible if every datum had remained locked in sequential media.
The lineage is unbroken. Today’s data centers, filled with spinning disks and solid-state drives that train large language models, still rest on the engineering principle first shipped with the RAMAC: place a vast, addressable memory beside the processor and let the program roam freely through it. When we speak of “big data” powering modern AI, we are describing the long echo of that September announcement.
What began as a better way to keep accounts became the indispensable external memory of intelligent machines.
