1939: Britain declares war, igniting codebreaking that shaped computing and AI

On 3 September 1939 the United Kingdom declared war on Germany, two days after the invasion of Poland. That single calendar date triggered an immediate, secret mobilisation of mathematicians and engineers whose wartime work became one of the deepest roots of modern computing and artificial intelligence.

Within hours the Government Code and Cypher School summoned its recruits to Bletchley Park. Alan Turing reported the following morning; the declaration itself was the starting gun. Tasked with breaking the German Enigma machine, Turing and his colleagues turned his 1936 theoretical “universal machine” into working electromechanical Bombes that systematically searched vast key spaces. The same pressure later produced Colossus, designed by Tommy Flowers, the first large-scale programmable electronic digital computer, used against the Lorenz teleprinter cipher.

These machines did more than win battles. They demonstrated that complex logical inference, pattern detection in noisy data, and high-speed search could be automated. After the war the people and ideas migrated into peacetime laboratories: the Manchester Baby, EDSAC, and early American computers all carried Bletchley DNA. Turing’s own 1950 paper on machine intelligence, the birth of information theory, and the first tentative programs that played chess or proved theorems all drew on techniques forged under the urgency that began on 3 September.

The intellectual thread is easy to follow. Wartime cryptanalysis treated intelligence as a computational search problem—exactly the framing that later underpinned heuristic search, machine learning classifiers, and today’s large language models that discover statistical regularities in enormous corpora. Error-correcting methods developed for noisy radio intercepts reappear in modern neural-network training; the very notion that a machine could out-reason a human expert received its first large-scale proof in the huts of Bletchley Park.

When we watch an AI system decode protein structures, negotiate natural language, or spot anomalies in data streams, we are still harvesting the harvest planted when Britain went to war on 3 September 1939. A geopolitical emergency forced the practical realisation of abstract computability and, in doing so, quietly launched the long project we now call artificial intelligence.
