1632: John Locke is born

On 29 August 1632, the English philosopher John Locke was born in Wrington, Somerset. Educated at Oxford and later a physician and political thinker, Locke became one of the central figures of empiricism. His major work, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1690), argued that the mind at birth is a “white paper” or tabula rasa, void of innate ideas, and that all knowledge arises from sensory experience and reflection upon it.

Locke distinguished simple ideas received through the senses from complex ideas built by the mind’s operations of combining, comparing and abstracting. He insisted that certainty is limited and that much of what we call knowledge is probable belief grounded in careful observation. These claims challenged the rationalist tradition of Descartes and Leibniz and shifted attention toward how minds actually acquire and organise information about the world.

The thread from Locke to artificial intelligence is indirect yet unmistakable. Twentieth-century cognitive science and behaviourism drew heavily on empiricist notions of learning from experience. When researchers began building machines that improve through data rather than hand-crafted rules, they were, in effect, engineering a technological counterpart to Locke’s blank slate. Supervised and unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning, and large-scale statistical models all rest on the premise that intelligent behaviour can emerge from exposure to patterns in the environment—an idea Locke articulated three centuries earlier.

Even debates that animate today’s AI research echo Lockean themes: the relative contributions of architecture versus data, the reliability of inductive generalisation, and the limits of what can be known from finite observations. Contemporary systems that train on vast corpora and then generate fluent language or recognise images are practical realisations of the empiricist wager that experience, suitably processed, can yield competence.

Locke never imagined electronic computers, yet his insistence that the mind is shaped by what it encounters continues to inform how we design, train and evaluate artificial agents. On this anniversary of his birth we recognise a philosophical ancestor whose quiet revolution in epistemology still resonates in every neural network that learns from examples.
