1770: Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel is born

On 27 August 1770, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born in Stuttgart, in what is now Germany. One of the last great systematic philosophers of the European tradition, Hegel left behind a vision of mind, logic and history that continues—often unnoticed—to shape how we think about intelligence itself, artificial or otherwise.

Hegel’s philosophy centres on the dialectic: the idea that thought and reality advance through the clash of opposing positions. A thesis encounters its antithesis; their conflict is resolved in a richer synthesis that preserves and transcends both. In the Phenomenology of Spirit (1807) and the Science of Logic, he portrayed reason not as a static set of rules but as a living, self-correcting process. Consciousness, he argued, comes to know itself only by struggling with what it is not.

These ideas migrated far beyond philosophy departments. In the mid-twentieth century, as cybernetics and early AI emerged, thinkers interested in feedback, self-organisation and contradiction found unexpected resonance with Hegel. Later, researchers in artificial intelligence began building systems that reason by dialogue, that resolve inconsistencies, or that learn through adversarial processes. Argumentation theory, non-monotonic logic and multi-agent negotiation protocols all carry faint dialectical fingerprints.

Even contemporary machine learning has its Hegelian echoes. Generative adversarial networks pit two networks against each other so that each improves; reinforcement learning agents refine policies through trial, error and opposing rewards. When large language models produce an answer, critique it and revise, they perform a miniature dialectic. Debates about whether machines can possess genuine understanding or self-consciousness still circle questions Hegel posed two centuries ago about Geist—mind or spirit.

Hegel never imagined silicon chips or neural networks. Yet by insisting that intelligence is historical, social and self-overcoming, he helped set the terms for later inquiries into what minds are and how they might be engineered. On this August day we remember that the road to artificial intelligence winds through the dense forests of German idealism as surely as through the laboratories of Cambridge and Dartmouth.
