1868: Paul Otlet is born

On 23 August 1868, Paul Otlet was born in Brussels. Trained as a lawyer, he soon abandoned the courtroom for a far more ambitious project: bringing order to the world’s rapidly multiplying store of knowledge. In an age of proliferating books, journals and official reports, Otlet saw that traditional libraries could no longer keep pace. What was needed, he believed, was a new kind of universal catalogue and a new machinery of thought.

With his collaborator Henri La Fontaine he devised the Universal Decimal Classification and began filling the Mundaneum—an enormous repository of index cards that ultimately numbered in the millions. Otlet described this collection as a “mechanical, collective brain.” He sketched workstations at which a researcher could follow trails of associations from document to document, and even imagined remote access by telegraph or telephone. Long before electronic computers existed, he was designing the intellectual architecture of hypertext and networked knowledge.

The Mundaneum itself was scattered by war and neglect, yet Otlet’s ideas travelled. Vannevar Bush’s famous 1945 essay on the Memex—a desk-sized device for building “associative trails” through microfilm—echoes Otlet’s language almost uncannily. Bush in turn inspired Ted Nelson’s hypertext, Douglas Engelbart’s oN-Line System, and ultimately Tim Berners-Lee’s World Wide Web. Each step carried forward the same conviction: that knowledge becomes powerful when it can be linked, queried and recombined.

Modern artificial intelligence stands on that same foundation. Large language models, knowledge graphs and semantic search engines are the electronic descendants of Otlet’s card cabinets. When an AI system retrieves scattered facts, draws unexpected connections and returns a coherent answer, it realises, in silicon and at global scale, the dream first articulated by the Belgian bibliographer born on this day. Otlet never saw a computer, yet the intellectual lineage that runs from his Mundaneum to today’s AI is direct, traceable and still unfolding.
