1662: Blaise Pascal dies
On 19 August 1662 the French mathematician, physicist and philosopher Blaise Pascal died in Paris at the age of thirty-nine. Though remembered today chiefly for his theological writings and for Pascal’s wager, he left an equally lasting mark on the history of automatic calculation.
In 1642, still a teenager, Pascal designed and built the Pascaline, a mechanical calculator that could add and subtract decimal numbers by means of interlocking dials and gears. He produced roughly twenty prototypes, some of which still survive in museums. The machine was intended to spare his father, a tax official, the drudgery of endless arithmetic; it also demonstrated that arithmetic operations could be performed by purely mechanical means, without continuous human intervention.
Pascal’s insight travelled far. Seventeenth- and eighteenth-century inventors refined his geared wheels; Charles Babbage later cited mechanical calculators as inspiration for the Difference and Analytical Engines; twentieth-century computer architects recognised in the Pascaline an early ancestor of the arithmetic-logic unit. The same conceptual leap—that reasoning itself might be mechanised—echoes in George Boole’s algebra of logic, in Alan Turing’s abstract machines, and ultimately in the software that powers modern artificial intelligence.
Today every smartphone, data-centre GPU and large language model still relies on the elementary idea Pascal made concrete: that numbers, and the operations upon them, can be entrusted to mechanism. When an AI system performs billions of additions in a fraction of a second, it is, in a very real sense, still turning Pascal’s dials.
