1945: V-J Day frees the minds that built AI
On 14 August 1945, news flashed across the world that Japan had accepted the Allied terms of surrender. In the United States the day became known as V-J Day. After nearly six years of global conflict, the guns fell silent. The formal instruments would be signed weeks later, yet 14 August marked the psychological and practical end of the Second World War.
That war had compressed decades of progress in automatic calculation and control into a few frantic years. At Bletchley Park, Alan Turing and his colleagues built electromechanical and electronic machines to break Enigma and Lorenz ciphers. In Pennsylvania, the ENIAC team raced to finish a machine that could compute artillery firing tables. Norbert Wiener worked on predictors for anti-aircraft fire; Claude Shannon applied Boolean logic to switching circuits and cryptography; John von Neumann shuttled between the Manhattan Project and the design of stored-program computers. These efforts were not yet called artificial intelligence, but they forged the hardware, the mathematics, and the habits of mind that AI would require.
Peace released those same people. Turing returned to fundamental questions and in 1950 published “Computing Machinery and Intelligence.” Wiener’s 1948 book Cybernetics gave a name and a vision to the study of control and communication in animal and machine. Von Neumann’s EDVAC report and later work on self-reproducing automata circulated freely. By the summer of 1956 the Dartmouth workshop could convene without wartime secrecy, and the field of artificial intelligence received its name and its first agenda.
The thread is easy to follow once seen. Wartime necessity proved that complex reasoning and goal-directed behaviour could be realised in mechanism. The arrival of peace on 14 August 1945 converted that proof into an open intellectual programme. Today’s large language models, robot systems and neural architectures still rest on the electronic computers, information theory and cybernetic insights that matured only after the world stopped fighting. Every time an AI system plans, learns or converses, it quietly inherits the dividend of that mid-August day of silence.
