1918: Frederick Sanger is born

On 13 August 1918, in the village of Rendcomb in Gloucestershire, England, Frederick Sanger was born. Few could have guessed that this quiet son of a country doctor would twice reshape the foundations of modern biology—and, indirectly, supply the raw material on which much of today’s artificial intelligence in the life sciences depends.

Sanger’s first great achievement was the complete sequencing of the amino acids in insulin, work that earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1958. At the time, determining the order of building blocks in a protein was a heroic laboratory feat. His second Nobel, shared in 1980, recognized the elegant chain-termination method for reading DNA. “Sanger sequencing” remained the dominant technology for a quarter-century and made possible the Human Genome Project, which delivered its draft sequence in 2001 and a finished version in 2003.

That project produced an unprecedented torrent of biological data. Suddenly the limiting factor was no longer the ability to read genomes but the ability to interpret them. Bioinformatics was born, and with it the need for algorithms that could find patterns in sequences too vast for unaided human inspection. Machine-learning techniques—hidden Markov models, support-vector machines, and eventually deep neural networks—entered the biologist’s toolkit.

The most spectacular recent fruit of this lineage is AlphaFold, the deep-learning system developed by DeepMind. By predicting three-dimensional protein structures from amino-acid sequences with astonishing accuracy, AlphaFold solved a problem that had stood for fifty years. Every one of those sequences ultimately traces its readability to methods Sanger pioneered. Similar AI systems now design enzymes, propose drug candidates, and help diagnose rare genetic diseases.

Thus a meticulous chemist working with paper chromatography and radioactive labels in the mid-twentieth century set in motion a chain of consequences that leads directly to the large-scale neural networks of the twenty-first. On this August day we remember that the data AI consumes have human origins, and that careful experimental science remains the indispensable partner of computational intelligence.
