1981: IBM launches the Personal Computer

On 12 August 1981, International Business Machines Corporation unveiled the IBM Personal Computer, model 5150, at a press conference in New York. Priced from about $1,565, the machine combined an Intel 8088 processor, up to 256 kilobytes of memory, a monochrome display, and the option of floppy-disk drives. Crucially, IBM published its technical specifications and encouraged third-party hardware and software—an “open architecture” decision that broke from the company’s traditionally closed mainframe culture.

Within months the PC and its clones flooded offices, universities and eventually homes. What had once required reserved time on a shared mainframe could now be done at a desk. Languages such as BASIC, Pascal and later C became everyday tools; spreadsheets, word processors and simple databases taught a generation to think of computation as interactive and personal rather than batch-oriented and remote.

That cultural and technical shift fed directly into the long arc toward artificial intelligence. Researchers who had struggled for scarce CPU cycles suddenly possessed affordable machines on which to prototype algorithms, run small neural-network experiments, and exchange code on floppy disks or early bulletin-board systems. The same open ecosystem that spawned Lotus 1-2-3 and WordPerfect also nurtured early expert-system shells, Prolog interpreters and the first widely distributed machine-learning toolkits. Graduate students could take work home; start-ups could bootstrap without leasing a mainframe.

Today’s AI landscape still bears the imprint of that August day. Modern deep-learning frameworks run on architectures that descend, however distantly, from the IBM PC’s bus and BIOS conventions. The expectation that powerful computation should be personal, programmable and extensible—first normalized by the 5150—underpins everything from laptops training small language models to the cloud instances that serve large ones. The beige box announced on 12 August 1981 did not invent artificial intelligence, yet it helped move AI from exclusive laboratories into the hands of countless experimenters whose cumulative work shaped the field we know.
