1950: Steve Wozniak is born

On 11 August 1950, Stephen Gary “Woz” Wozniak was born in San Jose, California. A gifted engineer with a playful streak, he would later co-found Apple Computer and design the Apple I and Apple II—machines that helped turn the computer from a room-sized institutional tool into something ordinary people could own, tinker with, and program.

Wozniak’s designs embodied clarity and economy. The Apple II, introduced in 1977, offered colour graphics, expandability, and a relatively approachable architecture at a price that schools, hobbyists, and small businesses could manage.
