1858: The first transatlantic telegraph cable is completed

On 5 August 1858, after years of broken cables, lost ships and nearly ruined investors, the first lasting telegraph line across the Atlantic was completed. A slender copper conductor, insulated with gutta-percha and armored with iron wire, finally linked Valentia Island in Ireland with Heart’s Content, Newfoundland. For the first time in history, a message could cross the ocean in minutes rather than weeks.

The driving force was the American entrepreneur Cyrus West Field, backed by British and American engineers and capital. Earlier attempts in 1857 and earlier in 1858 had failed spectacularly. The cable that reached shore on 5 August worked long enough for Queen Victoria and President Buchanan to exchange formal greetings, proving that instantaneous intercontinental communication was possible. Although the 1858 cable itself failed within weeks, the demonstration was decisive; permanent cables followed in the 1860s.

This Victorian triumph belongs to the deep prehistory of artificial intelligence because it created the first planetary nervous system. The practical problems of sending faint pulses through thousands of kilometres of noisy, leaky conductor forced engineers to think systematically about signals, noise, coding and error—questions that Claude Shannon would later place at the foundation of information theory. Global telegraphy also accustomed societies to the idea that knowledge could be everywhere at once.

From those early undersea wires grew telephone networks, coaxial cables, fibre-optic backbones and finally the internet. Modern AI systems exist inside that inheritance. Large language models are trained on data scraped from every continent and served to users through the same worldwide web of links whose ancestor was laid on the Atlantic floor in 1858. Distributed training clusters, real-time inference APIs and planetary-scale knowledge graphs all presuppose the capacity to move enormous volumes of information reliably across oceans—the capacity first glimpsed on that August day.

The fragile cable of 1858 was therefore more than an engineering stunt. It was an early, literal binding of the world into a single information system, a distant but direct ancestor of the interconnected intelligence we now call AI.
