1863: Henry Ford is born
On 30 July 1863 Henry Ford was born on a farm in Greenfield Township, Michigan. Few industrialists would leave a deeper mark on the technical imagination of the twentieth century. Ford’s central insight was deceptively simple: any complex artefact can be built faster and more reliably if the work is broken into the smallest possible repeatable steps and those steps are then arranged in a continuous flow.
In 1913 that insight became the moving assembly line at Highland Park. A Model T that once took more than twelve hours to assemble now rolled off the line in ninety minutes. The same principle of radical decomposition later migrated, almost unnoticed, into the foundations of computing and artificial intelligence. Programmers learned to factor problems into subroutines; robotics engineers learned to factor physical tasks into sensor-motor primitives; machine-learning researchers learned to factor perception and decision-making into layers of adjustable weights.
Ford’s own factories became living laboratories for the next stage. When the first industrial robot, Unimate, went to work in 1961 it was installed on an automobile line; Ford plants soon followed. Each new generation of robots, vision systems and scheduling algorithms simply extended the original assembly-line logic: measure every motion, store the data, optimise the sequence, and eventually let the machine decide.
Today the company that bears Ford’s name runs AI-driven quality inspection, predictive maintenance models and large-scale fleets of autonomous-vehicle prototypes. The intellectual thread remains unbroken. From a Michigan barn to the real-time optimisation engines of modern smart factories, the habit of turning craft into algorithm—first practised on 30 July’s most famous industrial birthday—continues to shape how artificial intelligence enters the physical world.
