1958: NASA is established

On 29 July 1958 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act, creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The new civilian agency absorbed the earlier National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics and was charged with peaceful exploration of air and space. From its first day NASA faced problems whose scale exceeded unaided human calculation: ballistic trajectories, orbital mechanics, real-time guidance, and the reliable control of complex vehicles millions of kilometres from Earth.

Those demands accelerated the development of digital computers and automatic control. Early contracts pushed transistorised machines, stored-program architectures and numerical methods that later became commonplace. As missions grew longer and communication delays stretched to minutes, engineers realised that spacecraft would need to make limited decisions on their own. Concepts from cybernetics, feedback theory and operations research flowed into onboard software; ground teams began experimenting with rule-based systems for anomaly diagnosis and scheduling.

By the 1970s and 1980s NASA was funding work that sat squarely inside what we now call artificial intelligence: expert systems for mission planning, early computer-vision algorithms for landing-site analysis, and autonomous navigation prototypes. The same institutional pressure that once required faster arithmetic now required machines that could perceive, reason under uncertainty and act when no human could intervene in time.

That thread continues uninterrupted into the present. Mars rovers use onboard machine-learning models for terrain assessment and path selection; Earth-observation satellites apply neural networks to torrents of imagery; mission-control tools employ reinforcement learning and probabilistic reasoning to manage constellations. The agency that opened its doors on this July day still treats autonomy as an engineering necessity rather than a laboratory curiosity, quietly carrying forward one of the oldest practical drivers of artificial intelligence research.
